Comments: National Bird Day

Well I think they're lovely. And Pamela Anderson is scary looking. If you got a bigger bird, he could probably wrap his little claws all the way round your wee wristy. They do make a lot of noise but we've heard you sing.

I had a bird for a while. Named Rainbow. The idiot who left him behind taught him two words: Rainbow and shit. It was "Rainbow, Rainbow, shit. Shit. Rainbow" for hours. We gave him away.

Loved what you said here. Esp re: the noise (the Canary downstairs is currently ringing like a mobile phone. We're hoping when the warmer weather comes he'll start singing the Hallelujah Chorus instead).

When attached to the larger parrots, those beaks can rip the skin clean off your fingers.

Some of them can rip the fingers clean off your fingers!

Your post has made me reconsider getting a canary when we move into our own place (at the moment we are installed Chez Familie and availing ourselves of the Family Canary). Instead, I'm going to install a luxury bird restaurant and swimming pool outside the kitchen window, and fill it with all the things that wild birds like best. And then I'm going to get a cup of tea and my binoculars and bird book, and settle down for a good bird-perving session.

(ps we were once offered a lion cub as a pet. I'm not joking. My parents, having four small children at the time, wisely declined.)

I'm loving the account of the burd farm and all the new spiffy photos. But I did have to comment on that last bit. I have a corn snake that I bought when he was a wee bitty baby for $35.00 2 1/2 years ago. I have probably spent less than $100.00 total on tanks, heat pads, etc., and he eats one live mouse approximately once a week which costs between .80 and $1.00 each. He hasn't ever bitten me (though it's been close a few times and I occassionally suffer from recurring nightmares that he is 50 feet long and ravenously hungry...) though I suspect someday he will. He's never needed to see a vet - at least as far as I'm concerned. All told he is way less headache than my two cats and a downright bargain to boot.

This made me laugh. Thanks.
