I still don't know whether it's Zuckerman or Zukerman.
I've been pondering that since yesterday. I think it's without the C. That's my instinct anyway. Zuckerman doesn't look quite right somehow.

Why do you persist in thinking of Zuckerman and Zukerman as one person? They're just two guys that share looks, nationality, and musical talents.
(The wikipedians have both names mapping to Pinchas Zukerman.)

Well, since "Zucker" means "sugar" in German, and this guy is Jewish, the correct spelling is probably Zuckerman, because Jews often have German names, even if they are born in Televiv. This of course, does not mean that all German names are Jewish, for instance my name, which is Jan Michael Snyder, is a Germanic name, and I have NO Jewish blood whatsoever. I think if Jews like Israel so much they shouldnt be moving to Canada.

Decline and Fall.
I am particularly fond of Scoop and Black Mischief.

Camilla - Really? I once had a teacher called Zuckerman, with a C. I don't think I've seen it with just a K before. The plot thickens....
Virge - Ha, ha. Good point. I wonder who this Socar Miles is, then?
some-one - Maybe he didn't like Israel--who knows? At any rate, Canada's lucky to have him. He's an exceptional musician.
jk - Thanks! It was driving me nuts, trying to remember the title. "Scoop" was one of my favourites, as well, but I can't remember which one "Black Mischief" was. (For shame.)

You'd love Black Mischief; the ending is right up your alley. He said without divulging.

I've never read any of these Waugh novels. But since you mentioned it, I'm reading this Vile Bodies thing, slowly. It hasn’t sparked my interest just yet, but the characters have amusing names, like the "The Right Honourable Walter Outrage". British humor is more musing than American humor anyway. I have numerous Great Britain stamps in my passport, and I lived in a squat in Elephant and Castle for a few months. That was actually quite funny because we got evicted and there was this Belgian guy and we actually went to public court in Lambeth to plead for more time before eviction. The owner of the building lived in Dubai and the judge and barristers wore powder wigs and smiled at my American accent.

I recommend the documentary "Death In Gaza" about a British cameraman who is killed by an Israeli bullet.
