Great Huge Glossy Rat

Photo by Gail

Behold a magnificent creature--the Great Huge Glossy Rat, found wherever there's food to be had and feet to be bitten! This peculiar creature, although indubitably a rat, accords itself godly status within its pointy little domain. It surveys its corner of the world in a magnanimous sort of way, from its lofty perch at the top of the food chain, sucking an egg as it reflects on the state of the world. "Rat race?" it chuckles, slurping down the yolk. "Why, I race for no-one. Oy, you--yes, you, over there! Bring us another egg!"

SONG FOR SUCKED EGGS

First, you poise your golden prize, full firm between your feet;
You sniff and pause and close your eyes, aquiver for your treat.
With tender care, you pierce the shell, and, drooling lightly, sigh
"Here goes nothing--what the hell!", and suck the bastard dry.
